Classes and training

Does NWAKC offer training classes?

No, not at present. The Natural State Golden Retriever Club occasionally runs classes in conformation handling, rally and scent work, so contact NSGRC to ask what is on their schedule.

How do I prepare for an event?

Several training facilities operate in Northwest Arkansas. Look for one that covers the sport you are interested in, whether that is obedience, rally, scent work or conformation handling. The club is currently unable to offer classes of its own.

Membership and getting involved

How do I become a member?

Prospective members attend three meetings before an application can be filed, and the membership votes on every application. The full process, both membership types and the application form are on the membership page.

Can I take part in events without being a member?

Yes. You do not need to be a member of NWAKC to enter any event the club hosts. Entries are open to every dog that meets the AKC eligibility requirements for that sport.

Events and competitions

What is a Fast CAT event and how can my dog take part?

Fast CAT is a timed 100-yard dash in which dogs chase a lure in a straight line, open to AKC-registered and PAL-listed dogs. How the timing, handicaps and titles work is explained on the Fast CAT page.

How do I sign up for NWAKC events?

Each event has a premium list that carries all the details, including how to enter and which methods of entry are accepted. Entry methods vary by event, so read the premium for the specific weekend you want to enter.

Can my dog take part if they are not purebred?

Mixed-breed dogs can compete in any AKC event except conformation. Your dog needs a registration number first: AKC Canine Partners for mixed breeds and for purebreds that cannot be registered, or a Purebred Alternative Listing (PAL) for a purebred that is not eligible for AKC registration.

Where do I find NWAKC events?

Upcoming dates are on the events page and the calendar. The AKC has to approve every trial and test the club hosts, so our events also appear in the AKC Event Search.

Are spectators welcome?

Yes. Spectators are welcome at club events.

Where can I find more details on an event?

The premium list is the guidebook for an event. It covers when and where it runs and what classes are offered, the judges, the entry form, entry fees, directions, camping information and parking. Premiums are published on the AKC site, on the superintendent’s site, or here on the event page. If you have a question about an event, the answer is usually in the premium.
